Enhancing and Correcting Previous Breast Surgeries

Breast implant revision can correct a wide range of issues, including:

  • Replacing Ruptured or Deflated Implants: Implants, whether silicone gel or saline, are not lifetime devices and may require replacement over time. If you’ve experienced a rupture or deflation, our surgeons can replace your implant, restoring the volume and shape of your breasts to your desired look.
  • Resizing Breast Implants: If you’re no longer satisfied with the size of your implants, whether they feel too large or too small, our team can help resize them to better match your current body goals and aesthetic preferences.
  • Switching Implant Types: You might have saline implants and now prefer silicone, or vice versa. Perhaps you’re interested in exploring newer implant options that weren’t available during your original surgery. Our surgeons can switch the type of your implant to suit your current needs.
  • Improving Implant Position and Shape: Sometimes, implants can shift over time or may not have been placed optimally during the initial surgery. We can adjust the position or shape to give you a more natural and symmetrical appearance.
  • Enhancing the Results of a Previous Breast Lift (Mastopexy): If your breast lift didn’t achieve the desired results or if you’re noticing sagging over time, we can refine the procedure to improve the lift, firmness, and overall shape of your breasts.

Recovery varies by the type of procedure and patient factors. Many patients are able to return to work a week after surgery. Regular activities can often be resumed at 4 weeks post-operation. Our surgeon will be better able to discuss individual recovery length with you during a consultation.

FAQ

Most frequently Asked questions and answers

Whether you will need breast revision surgery depends on various factors specific to your situation. Many individuals who undergo breast augmentation enjoy their results for a lifetime without any additional procedures. However, some circumstances might necessitate a revision.

When is Breast Revision Surgery Necessary?

  1. Complications from Initial Surgery: Occasionally, breast augmentation may lead to complications such as implant rupture, capsular contracture, or changes in implant position. These issues could make revision surgery necessary to restore the desired appearance and comfort.
  2. Unmet Expectations: If your initial breast augmentation did not yield the results you expected, revision surgery can help achieve the desired outcome. This might involve altering the implant size, shape, or type to better meet your aesthetic goals.
  3. Aesthetic Choices Over Time: Some patients choose to undergo revision surgery to update the look of their implants as personal preferences or body changes occur over time.

Benefits of Breast Revision

  • Improved Aesthetics: Revision surgery can refine or enhance the results of your initial procedure.
  • Addressing Functional Issues: It can correct any discomfort or functional issues caused by complications.
  • Minimized Scarring: Surgeons often use the original incision site, which helps to avoid additional scarring.

Not Always Needed

It’s important to note that not everyone with breast implants will require revision surgery. Many individuals retain their initial results without complications or the need for adjustments.

Final Considerations

Consulting with a qualified plastic surgeon is crucial for personalized advice. They can assess your unique situation, discuss your concerns, and help determine if breast revision surgery is right for you.

Changing your mind about breast implants is more common than you might think, and there are several options available if you decide to make a change down the line.

Options for Changing Your Implants

  1. Size Adjustments: You can opt to exchange your current implants for either a larger or smaller size to better suit your evolving aesthetic preferences.
  2. Different Types: If the type of implant becomes a concern, you have the option to switch from saline to silicone implants, or vice versa. Many women are now choosing silicone for its natural look and feel.
  3. Removal: Deciding to remove your implants altogether is also a valid option. Whether for health reasons or personal preference, a skilled plastic surgeon can guide you through the removal process.

Discuss Your Needs

It’s important to share your potential concerns or future reservations with your plastic surgeon during your initial consultation. This will help to outline the best approach tailored to your evolving needs.

  • Expert Guidance: Having an extensively trained plastic surgeon ensures you receive advice tailored specifically to your situation.
  • Flexible Planning: Discussing your long-term goals can help determine if a breast implant exchange or an entirely different procedure would be most suitable for you.

So, whether it’s a minor adjustment or a complete removal, rest assured there are multiple paths you can take to achieve the look and feel you desire.

Double bubble deformity can arise from several factors related to implant placement, natural breast anatomy, and post-surgical conditions. Understanding these causes can help in both prevention and management.

Implant Placement

  • Submuscular Placement: When implants are placed beneath the chest muscle, they can sometimes shift or push the lower breast tissue down. This is particularly likely if the natural breast tissue is already somewhat droopy (ptotic).
  • Incorrect Pocket Creation: During surgery, creating the right pocket for the implant is essential. An improperly created pocket can result in misplacement, leading to a double bubble effect.

Natural Breast Anatomy

Women with significant natural breast tissue are at a higher risk of developing double bubble deformity, especially if their tissue sags. The discrepancy between the natural tissue and the implant can lead to a noticeable separation between the two.

Post-Surgical Factors

  • Healing and Scarring: The healing process and the formation of scar tissue can sometimes affect the implant’s position, resulting in a double bubble appearance.
  • Weight Fluctuations: Significant weight changes can impact both breast tissue and implant positioning, contributing to the development of this deformity.

By taking these factors into account, medical professionals and patients can better prepare for and potentially mitigate the risk of double bubble deformity.

Ensuring a smooth and aesthetically pleasing outcome from breast revision surgery involves several key steps. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help patients achieve the natural, harmonious breast contour they desire.

  1. Consult with an Experienced Specialist

Begin by scheduling a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon who has a focus on breast surgery revisions. During this appointment:

  • Examination: The surgeon will perform a detailed examination of your current breast implants and tissue.
  • Medical History: Your complete medical history will be reviewed to identify any factors that might affect the surgery.
  • Goal Discussion: You’ll have an in-depth discussion about your aesthetic goals, enabling the surgeon to craft a personalized treatment plan.
  1. Explore Surgical Solutions

Depending on your unique situation, several surgical options may be considered:

  • Implant Repositioning: This involves adjusting the pocket where the implant rests. The surgeon might lower the crease under your breast (inframammary fold) or move the implant to a new location to achieve better alignment.
  • Type or Size Change: In some cases, switching to a different type or size of implant can create a more balanced look. For example, moving an implant from beneath the muscle (submuscular) to above it (subglandular) can yield better results.
  • Capsule Adjustment (Capsulorrhaphy): Tightening the capsule around the implant helps secure it in place, preventing future shifting.
  • Breast Lift (Mastopexy): When there’s significant sagging (ptosis), combining a breast lift with implant revision can remove excess skin and reshape breast tissue. An “internal bra” technique might be discussed to provide additional support.
  1. Follow a Strategic Post-Surgical Care Plan

Post-operative care is vital for a smooth recovery and optimal results. Make sure to:

  • Wear a Supportive Bra: This helps in maintaining the new shape and position of your breasts.
  • Avoid Strenuous Activities: Activities that involve heavy lifting or intense physical exertion should be avoided to prevent complications.
  • Attend Follow-Up Appointments: Regular check-ins with your surgeon ensure any issues are promptly addressed and healing is monitored.

Final Thoughts

By meticulously following these steps, patients can enhance the chances of achieving a natural and harmonious breast contour post-revision surgery. A detailed consultation, an appropriate surgical plan, and diligent post-surgical care form the cornerstone of successful outcomes.

Implant placement plays a significant role in the development of the double bubble issue. Here’s how:

  • Submuscular Placement: When implants are positioned beneath the chest muscle, there’s a risk of the implant shifting. This shift can lead to the lower part of the breast appearing droopy, especially if the natural breast tissue was already slightly sagging (ptotic). The interaction between the muscle and the implant can create an unnatural contour, resulting in the double bubble effect.
  • Incorrect Pocket Creation: The surgical creation of the pocket where the implant is placed is crucial. A poorly constructed pocket can lead to the implant settling incorrectly. If the pocket is not fashioned properly, the implant might not sit harmoniously with the natural breast tissue, leading to visible demarcation lines that contribute to the double bubble appearance.

In essence, both the placement under the muscle and the precision in creating the implant pocket are critical for avoiding the double bubble issue. Proper technique and planning during surgery are essential for achieving a smooth and natural-looking result.

Absolutely, altering the type or size of your breast implant can play a significant role in correcting a double bubble deformity. Here are a few ways this can be accomplished:

  • Implant Size Adjustment: Opting for a new implant size, whether larger or smaller, can help achieve a more balanced and natural appearance. A different size may better match your unique anatomy, providing a more harmonious look.
  • Switching Implant Types: Moving from one type of implant to another, such as from saline to silicone, can also make a difference. Different implant materials have distinct properties and may sit differently within the breast tissue.
  • Placement Modification: Changing the placement of the implant—from a submuscular (beneath the muscle) to a subglandular (above the muscle) position—can sometimes resolve the issue. Each placement method offers different advantages that may better suit your specific needs.

By thoughtfully selecting the appropriate implant type, size, and placement, you can effectively address and correct a double bubble deformity, leading to improved aesthetic results.

Key Takeaways

  • Expertise Matters: Seek out a board-certified plastic surgeon for specialized knowledge and skills.
  • Personalized Care: A tailored approach ensures the best possible outcome.
  • Safety First: Trust in an experienced professional to handle your procedure with the utmost precision.

Choosing the right plastic surgeon is paramount to achieving the desired results and ensuring your safety throughout the treatment process.

A breast lift, or mastopexy, effectively addresses the double bubble deformity, a condition where the breast implant creates a visible crease, resulting in an unnatural breast shape. Here’s how it works:

  • Excess Skin Removal: By eliminating surplus skin, a mastopexy tightens and reshapes the breast, which helps smooth out the contours and diminishes the appearance of the double bubble.
  • Natural Tissue Reshaping: The procedure also involves reshaping the natural breast tissue, ensuring the tissue conforms more naturally around the implant. This redistribution contributes to a more harmonious breast appearance.
  • Adding an Internal Bra: In some cases, surgeons may recommend the use of an “internal bra,” a support structure integrated within the breast. This acts like an internal scaffolding that helps maintain the newly shaped breast and keeps the implant in the correct position.
  • Combined Procedures: Often, a breast lift is combined with other surgeries, such as implant revision. Together, these surgeries can address multiple aesthetic concerns, leading to a more comprehensive improvement in breast appearance.

Discussing these options with a qualified surgeon allows you to tailor the approach to your unique needs and achieve the best possible results in correcting the double bubble deformity.

Weight fluctuations can significantly impact breast implants and contribute to complications like double bubble deformity.

How Weight Changes Affect Implants:

  • Breast Tissue Shifts: Gaining or losing weight can cause your natural breast tissue to shift, altering the way your implants sit.
  • Size and Shape Changes: Significant weight loss can reduce the volume of your breast tissue, making implants more prominent and possibly repositioning them.
  • Skin Elasticity: Weight gain can stretch the skin, while weight loss can lead to sagging skin. Both scenarios can change how your implants are positioned.

What is Double Bubble Deformity?

Double bubble deformity occurs when the implant drops below the natural fold of the breast, creating a visible crease or “double bubble.” This is often the result of significant weight changes after breast augmentation.

Preventive Measures

  1. Stable Weight Maintenance: Aim to keep your weight stable after getting implants to minimize shifting.
  2. Supportive Garments: Wearing a well-fitted bra can support implants and natural tissue.
  3. Consultation with a Specialist: If you experience weight changes, consult your surgeon to discuss potential impacts and preventive measures.

By understanding the relationship between weight fluctuations and implant positioning, you can take steps to maintain the best results and avoid complications like double bubble deformity.

After undergoing revision surgery for double bubble deformity, adhering to post-surgical care routines is paramount for achieving the best possible results and ensuring your recovery goes smoothly.

Key Aspects of Post-Surgical Care

  1. Supportive Garments: Wearing a specially designed supportive bra helps in maintaining the proper position of implants, reducing swelling, and providing necessary support to the healing tissue.
  2. Activity Restrictions: Limiting strenuous activities is crucial to prevent complications. Activities that involve heavy lifting or intense physical exertion can strain the surgery site and hinder the healing process.
  3. Follow-Up Appointments: Regular follow-up visits with your surgeon are essential. These appointments allow your surgeon to monitor your recovery progress, address any concerns promptly, and make necessary adjustments to your post-operative care plan.
  4. Pain Management: Proper management of pain and discomfort is vital. Prescribed medications should be taken as directed to control pain and prevent infection.

Why Post-Surgical Care is Crucial

  • Optimal Healing: Following your surgeon’s recommendations ensures that your body heals correctly and reduces the risk of complications, such as implant displacement or capsular contracture.
  • Enhanced Results: Effective post-surgical care maximizes the aesthetic outcomes. Complying with all care instructions can significantly improve the final appearance, ensuring you achieve your desired look.
  • Prevention of Complications: Adhering to post-operative guidelines prevents potential complications that can prolong recovery time or necessitate additional surgery.

In summary, thorough post-surgical care combines support, monitoring, and prevention strategies to promote optimal healing, improved results, and overall satisfaction with your revision surgery. Following these comprehensive instructions is a critical step towards ensuring a successful outcome and long-term health.

A consultation with a specialist is vital for addressing the double bubble issue for several reasons:

Personalized Evaluation

A board-certified plastic surgeon can conduct a detailed assessment, examining your breast structure and identifying the underlying cause of the double bubble effect. This precise evaluation is critical to formulating an effective treatment plan specifically tailored to your needs.

Expertise and Experience

Specialists in breast surgery revisions possess extensive knowledge and experience. They are familiar with the complexities of various breast issues and can leverage their expertise to recommend the most appropriate corrective procedures. This ensures a higher likelihood of achieving the desired outcome.

Comprehensive Medical Review

During the consultation, the surgeon will review your medical history thoroughly. Understanding your past surgeries, existing medical conditions, and overall health enables the surgeon to gauge any potential risks and devise a safe and effective treatment approach.

Clarification of Aesthetic Goals

Understanding your aesthetic goals is an integral part of the consultation process. The surgeon will engage in an in-depth discussion to understand your expectations and preferences. This collaboration helps in crafting a treatment plan that aligns with your vision while considering the technicalities involved.

Customized Treatment Plan

The consultation culminates in devising a customized treatment plan. Based on the detailed examination, medical history, and your aesthetic goals, the surgeon can recommend the best corrective measures. Whether it involves surgical revision, implants adjustment, or other techniques, the plan will be uniquely designed for optimal results.

Consulting a specialist gives you a clear path to resolving the double bubble issue with precision, safety, and an alignment to your desired aesthetic outcomes.

Remember:

  1. Always choose a board-certified plastic surgeon.
  2. Ensure they have a specialty in breast surgery revisions.
  3. Verify their experience with similar cases to yours.

Post-surgical factors like healing and scar tissue development play a significant role in the occurrence of a double bubble deformity. When the body heals after an implant surgery, scar tissue naturally forms around the implant. This scar tissue, known as a capsule, helps to hold the implant in place. However, complications can arise.

Key Influences:

  1. Scar Tissue Formation:
    • Excessive Scarring: Excessive scar tissue can sometimes distort the shape of the breast implant, leading to a misplacement.
    • Capsular Contracture: Tightening of this tissue can push the implant into an unnatural position, causing a double bubble effect.
  2. Healing Process:
    • Tissue Relaxation: Over time, the tissues around the implant relax and adjust. If this adjustment is uneven or disrupted, it may cause the implant to shift.
    • Inflammation: Persistent inflammation during the healing process can also lead to the shifting of the implant.
  3. Surgical Technique and Aftercare:
    • Placement Precision: The initial placement of the implant by the surgeon must be precise. Any slight miscalculation can be exacerbated by the healing process.
    • Post-operative Care: Proper aftercare is crucial. Following the surgeon’s guidelines can help mitigate risks related to healing and scarring.

By understanding these factors, patients can better prepare and follow medical advice to minimize complications and achieve desired results. Effective communication with a qualified plastic surgeon regarding the potential risks and proper post-surgical care is essential for a smooth recovery.

Occasionally, the pocket housing the implant violates the infra-mammary crease. And, when this occurs, we have what is termed a double bubble. This means essentially that the implant is moved below the formation where a crease causing a double indentation and double fullness at and below the infra-mammary crease. Attempts to create this crease without removing the implant usually fail.

It’s important to note that the double bubble deformity is rare. While this complication can be concerning, it is both identifiable and treatable. With patience and skill, it can be corrected.

So there are three types of revision surgery that may be required after breast augmentation: capsular contracture, symmastia, and double bubble. Each of these issues, though challenging, can be addressed effectively with the right surgical approach.
