PLASTIC SURGERY TOURISM—GOOD OR BAD?

PLASTIC SURGERY TOURISM

Taking measures to improve our appearance – has always been important to us as human beings. Throughout the world there’s a high desire to make anatomic changes to maximize our appearance and look our best. The fundamental basis for this- is personal, and in most instances -assist us in improving our self-esteem and self-confidence. Looking our best makes us feel good.

Making a decision as to where to go- can be very complex and time-consuming. Factors that must be considered when deciding who and where to go- include first:
–the level of performance, knowledge, experience, skill training and talent of the operating surgeon.

— the facility and the anesthesia provider are of great importance.
All of these elements come with a cost. Oftentimes, patients seeking the best, make a wrong decision- by seeking the cheapest. Cheapness and Plastic Surgery can be a big mistake. Traveling outside the country has become popular because primarily it is less expensive.

People who leave the country seeking plastic surgery in a foreign land oftentimes suffer great complications that manifest themselves when they return home to the States. Board Certified Plastic Surgeons in the United States know their true value, know their worth, and fees vary from Region to Region, Practice to Practice.

My advice- is to select a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon in the United States of America and, preferably a Member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

There are many instances where – patients having surgery outside USA, experience difficult complications. Returning to the Operating Surgeon in the foreign land may not always be possible. What is less likely- is to find a Board Certified Surgeon in America to treat the complication.

As with all medical and surgical treatments there are legal elements. Once a Plastic Surgeon takes on complications from a foreign land, the patient has a tendency then to identify the American Plastic Surgeon as the cause of the problems. This is why most Plastic Surgeons will not take on patients that have experienced complications by Physicians outside of this country.

Techniques may be different, medical records not available, and the overall level of care received in the foreign land is mostly unknowable.

It’s unfortunate that people seek Plastic Surgery outside of America when we have, in my opinion, the highest level of care of all specialties especially Plastic Surgery in the United States of America.
You really do get what you pay for. That’s not to say high price is equated with quality. But American self-respecting Plastic Surgeons know their worth and try to provide the best possible care available.
