IS LABIAPLASTY FOR ME?
The entry to the vagina is identified as the labia. The outer lips or labia majora are constant and do not vary much in shape or size. During sexual arousal, they become filled with blood and become engorged. The inner lips or labia minora are more visible and intimately involved in sexual activity. Childbirth takes its toll on these inner lips. They can become discolored, elongated, and somewhat irregular. When this occurs, they can hurt during sex and exercise. And some women find their appearance less than acceptable.
Therefore included with the concept of a mommy makeover, which classically involves the breasts and the abdomen – the inner labia can also be trimmed. Therefore, labioplasty can in some instances be part of the mommy makeover reconstruction process. The trimming and redesigning of the inner labia can be very rewarding for many patients. The incision and excision will extend the length of the redundant area and create a more aesthetic inner labial lips.
DISCOMFORT AND RECOVERY
The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia in our practice and a long-acting local is applied to minimize the postoperative discomfort. Cold compresses for several days postoperatively will help minimize the discomfort. Recovery with regard to exercise and sexual activity can be anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks. This will depend on the process of healing which is individualized for each and every woman.
The tissue covering the clitoris is usually not part of but can be, the inner lip excision and redesign. Labiaplasty has become a much more popularly requested procedure than in the past. It can be thought of as a twofold benefit – improve the appearance of the labia and also maximize sexual function.
