CAN I HAVE A BREAST LIFT WITH MINIMAL SCARRING?

The short answer is yes. However, it’s essential to remember minimal scarring does not mean no scar. As a plastic surgeon, I am committed to achieving the best possible scar for all surgical procedures. Keep in mind that scar placement and scar geometry play a significant role in the outcome.

For example, if you have a round lesion – say a mole – to achieve a straight-line scar of minimal length the excision will be an ELIPSE whose long axis must be at least 1.5 times the diameter of the round lesion. If it’s shorter there will be bunching or raised areas at the extreme limits of the scar.

As a plastic surgeon scar placement is essential. We always strive to achieve the best possible least visible scar. Concerning breast lifts, many attempts have been made through the years to create the shortest scar for this particular operation. None of them have succeeded, however. The basic classic scar for breast lift includes a circular incision around the areola, a vertical component down to the infra-mammary crease, and then the shortest possible scar within the infra-mammary crease.

Breast Augmentation and Scarring

If, however, there is excessive tissue that extends into the axilla then an extended scar will be required to facilitate removal and achieving the best contour for that particular breast at that time. There’s also a procedure called a crescent lift that lifts the nipple 1 to 1.5 cm. This incision is made at the top of the areola. Usually horizontal from 9 o’clock to 3 o’clock.

Minimal scarring is always the goal – but not at the compromise of the final best result. In addition to scar placement and closure techniques, the patient’s healing capacity must be addressed. Good hydration, good nutrition, scar creams, and local scar care and treatment are essential to achieve the best for any operation. Especially a breast lift. Each patient must have realistic expectations about their procedure.

Remember we cannot do body contouring procedures like breast lift with no scar. We are committed to minimal scar and the greatest possible result with the most inconspicuous well-healed incision site possible.
