AM I TOO YOUNG TO HAVE LIPOSUCTION?

liposuctionCosmetic surgery for teens comes up periodically during our clinic process. Certain principles are followed to achieve excellent results and safety for the younger ones among us. A liposuction is a valuable tool for body contouring and spot fat removal. It is not a substitute for diet exercise and a healthy lifestyle. These principles apply to teens as well. It’s well documented that females and males pass through puberty and achieve adult anatomic status at different rates.

When presented with a teenager in our practice we counsel them on diet and exercise. It’s best to achieve close to the ideal weight possible as soon as possible in adult life. There are certain areas of the female anatomy even during the teenage years that will respond to liposuction. Lateral thighs or so-called saddlebags are the primary areas where we can achieve benefits. Like all plastic surgery, a diagnosis is required.

If the diagnosis is excess fat, as well as excess skin then surgical excision, is indicated and liposuction alone will not be of major benefit. Submental areas can benefit from liposuction in the teen years in addition to possible rhinoplasty to achieve a more pleasing appearance.

Again, diagnosis is crucial and anatomic maturity is essential. Yes, it can be done and indicated in certain specific instances. But we like to see teens get through puberty and achieve not only a mature anatomic status but also a more mature emotional acceptance of who they are. Cosmetic surgery and liposuction in teens can be beneficial provided all these parameters are met in a thorough complete discussion and evaluation takes place.
