Mommy Makeover Before and After Pictures

The term “mommy makeover” has become popular over the past few years. It is not a surgical or medical term. It is used to describe the correction or the re-creation of pregnancy related body changes. Board certified plastic surgeons are the only physicians trained to perform these combinations of procedures.

The areas of the female body that are most clearly affected by multiple pregnancies are the breasts and the abdomen. There are more subtle changes that occur but these are the most notable. Pigment changes of the areola and the vulva– although less troublesome do also occur.

The breasts become engorged and enlarged and stretched. The abdominal wall skin also becomes stretched beyond its capacity. The abdominal wall muscles are separated in the midline normally––but during multiple pregnancies it is often difficult to resume their normal closer midline position. This is referred to as a diastasis. After repeated expansion and contraction of both the breasts and the abdominal wall, the skin loses its ability to contract completely and restore the pre-pregnancy more pleasing shape and size.

Therefore the restoration of the aesthetic appearance of the breasts—as with a breast lift—with or without implants–, realignment of the abdominal muscles, and tightening of the abdominal wall skin as in an abdominoplasty – including liposuction of the hips and flanks-if needed-is commonly referred to as “ mommy makeover”.

It takes time for a woman to transition from the childbearing years into a lifestyle once again committed to looking her best. Pregnancy is no doubt a beautiful state of being provided all family circumstances are in order. —The anatomic changes can be disheartening and irreversible. Pregnancy and the joy of bringing children into the world are fulfilling components of a woman’s life-that men will never be able to understand fully- although whose participation is essential. During these years it is difficult for a woman to be completely mindful of the how she will look in the years ahead. Just to be safe we advise that measures be taken to reduce if not eliminate further pregnancies – thus helping to maximize any investment a woman may choose to make in regaining perkier or fuller breasts and /or her flattest-tightest abdomen.

Once all of the emotionality is absorbed and a new direction is commenced – we gain a glimpse of what the future may hold. Most all of our patients are willing to give us permission to use their before and after photos and in some instances allow filming of their operation so as to assist others in arriving at a state of mind permitting restoration of a figure possibly lost through weight gain/loss and/or multiple pregnancies. Although these procedures are viewed as cosmetic and not covered by insurance – they are nevertheless a reconstructive challenge and adventure.
